How to 3D print cookie cutters from an STL file
An STL file is the standard 3D model format that every slicer reads. The TCM Workshop gives you one for your cutter, so printing it is the same as printing any other model on a desktop FDM printer.
From STL to cutter
- Download your STL. Make your cutter in the Workshop and download the file.
- Open it in your slicer. Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer all open STL files directly.
- Print it with the cutting edge up or down as you prefer. Most people lay the cutter flat on the build plate so the shape prints without supports.
- Use a plain, single-colour print. A reasonably fine layer height gives a smoother cutting edge.
- Finish and test. Remove any stringing, then cut a test cookie in a dough you know holds its shape.
Tips for cutters that work
- Chill your dough so the cut edges stay sharp.
- Dip the cutter in flour between cuts if the dough sticks.
- If a design is too delicate, widen the outline with padding in the Workshop and reprint.
- Test a new design in cheap material before printing a batch.
- Wash plastic cutters by hand and let them dry fully.
No printer?
You can order any Workshop design as a physical cutter from The Cookie Mercantile, so you do not need a 3D printer at all.
